Down The Rabbit Hole
Down the Rabbit Hole is a biographical work presenting an experience of home and motherhood under a veil of post-natal depression.
My first work 'Down The Rabit Hole' is an enquiry as to how we all, in our family, experienced the same home differently. I wondered how spaces that interrupted me and my very senses so negatively, opened a world of wonder and contentment for our children. In my moments of grey they could see colour.
My husband works away from home, and as I struggle with motherhood and the chaos and darkness around me, I observe how he manages, with envy. The discipline of routine and rules, a lifeline... but not for me.
Initially I photographed all three children, but over the course of time I was compelled more so to photograph our daughter. She was the youngest at three years of age, and seemed to experience the home in such a contented way.
I could have mourned the demise of my own imagination and youth, but instead I became enveloped by the enquiry, which inadvertently helped my depression at times. She sometimes led her brothers with her wherever she was going, and on occasion I could find myself there too.
